In and Out

The Diarrhea Pill. That title caught my attention.

I’ve seen these pills before, but evidently the FDA has now
approved the OTC sales of this diet miracle that will stop your intestines from absorbing one-fourth of the fat you eat. Of course, anal discharge is one of the side affects. But hey – that’s a fair trade for being able to eat what I want, right?

As one who has recently suffered a bout with the flu, I can assure you that I am not in the least bit interested in ingesting something for the sole purpose of increasing the rate at which my body expels it. That was for you sensitive stomach people. ;-)

All kidding aside, let me ask a question. What do you call someone who takes a pill so that what they eat goes right through them?

I’m not saying that this pill is a form of bulimia. I AM pointing out the unmistakable umbrella under which we find them both.

I've been admiring your art for quite some time now. This picture, accompanied with your discussion of yet another pill, is my favorite. I am always anxious to see what you will think of next.

You're so creative.. I love this entry.. I saw some show called "Intervention" about a girl suffering from bulimia. To "control" her bulimia, she would take lots and lots of laxative pills as an alternative to throwing up. It's definitely related and I don't think it solves anything. Yet another pill is definitely bad news..

Anal discharge. Is that what the medical profession calls it these days?

You're right of course. The solution isn't a pill that lets the food we eat slide right out of us. The solution is to address the reason the food keeps going in.

I always love finding that you have a new picture up.

"anal discharge" is why I won't eat those olestra chips :) That is one side effect that I'd personally like to avoid.

I suppose, however, you could say that it makes a little more sense than water pills - since those just get rid of water weight.

Great picture!

So much human suffering from our non-ending struggle for "beauty". Isn't it hard to believe that in this day and age of instant information, increased life span, advanced medical intervention, we as a species have not advanced at all in our quest for happiness, or self-acceptance?

We are all putting ourselves through untold agony. Every day at work that's all people talk about--if you're losing, they want to know how. If you're not, you're asking those who are their secret.

I'll bet not too many people admit they'd take a pill like this, suffer terrible stomach cramps like this and of course the final outcome like this if they thought it would really work.

We cannot overeat with impugnity.

I remember in the late 70s there was a "miracle pill" that allowed people to overeat, eat what they wanted, etc. and "still lose weight" It took awhile, but eventually the secret leaked out: the "pills" were tape worm eggs... And people kept buying them for awhile after that!

You are reaching a lot of people with your very thought provoking blog.

Is it wrong that the sundae looks really good to me? I had a friend who was taking a pill with a similar effect. I think it gave her acne as well as the diarrhea, but as I recall she loved it.

Tape worm eggs???!!!!

I'm sorry - that just conjures up images of aliens ready to burst out of my stomach! Of course, my fear of all things bugs and critters doesn't help.

The best part about this latest pill is that on average, test subjects only lost approximately 6 pounds more than their placebo-taking counterparts! How does a pill like this get approved?? You can lose 6 pounds in two weeks just by doing that Special K diet! If you REALLY needed to lose 6 pounds, wouldn't you prefer to do it by eating cereal?? Are we that out of control of ourselves that we would CHOOSE "anal leakage"...on purpose??

We live in a totally bizarre society.

I called it Greasy Oily Anal Discharge. It's tasty on the toilet bowl - sticks like glue.

Christi, this is wonderful stuff. I hope you are putting together some kind of book or photo collection based on this work. I'd love to have it for a coffee table volume or in a collage.

Love that picture! Is that from Friendly's??? :)

I had a doctor suggest I go on Meridia or Xenical at my last appointment. I am one of those cruchy girls that doesn't believe in Big Pharma. I researched both drugs and turned them both down although the lazy girl in me was tempted by the Meridia because that would only raise my blood pressure through the roof and give me a possible seizure compared to the "oily discharge".

I don't know why ANYONE would want to take Xenical when it causes "spontaneous bowel movements", and disrupts the absorption of nutrients -- especially as mentioned above, for a six pound weight loss.

The Diet Industry + Big Pharma + Media Terrorism + already low self esteem = Anal Leakage.

That pill thing is gross. It's pretty sad what's happening to our society when it becomes more important to be thin than it is to be healthy.
Let's face it when had diarrhea ever been healthy?
PS I love all your pictures. Are they by you or have you just accidentally found them?

Thanks everyone. This one's kinda gross, huh?

Laura - I'm not familiar with Friendly's. ???

B.A. - These images are all self-portraits taken by me and my remote. ;-)

Sorry Christi! I meant the sundae. It looks like one of those Reese's Pieces sundaes from Friendly's.

It also started a Pavlovian response despite the pills in the whipped cream so I thought I might have subconsciously recognized it. ;)

please do a google search on "health at every size" and see if what you find there offers another perspective that is helpful.

I like what you say about the latest drug being akin to bullemia, and I haven't read a lot of your blog but found your pics on flickr. beautiful work, and thought provoking as well.
