Programmed to Perform

Programmed to Perform

Even in a virtual world, a poser ball scripts a woman to drop to her knees.

A friend and I came across a house in Second Life. It looked like the proverbial suburban home, full of self-important treasures. Swirling staircases, exotic furniture, expensive artwork. It was also full of little pink and blue balls called poser balls. We clicked on various ones to see what the script required of the gullible.

Juliette (my avatar) was taken over and moved into performance position, complete with the quintessential holding of the head.

This isn't atypical from my experience, but it continues to intrigue me that within a space where we can create our own "perfect world," women are still created to behave as submissive sex objects. And it's the women who create them.

Yeuch.

Women progammers creating a 'perfect world' with only men in mind?

Women are so programmed to think of themselves simply as 'players' in men's 'perfect world'.

We need more feminist programmers!

Oh, but I'm forgetting....that'd never sell, would it...?

Grrr... what's the point in having a code of conduct in second life if it's not enforced?

I've had the same problem, stumbling across adult content outside of pre-warned zones.

I've never done this stuff. Can anyone recommend a game I might like, to buy?

I'd really not want to spend the money to come across something like this, but of course if I did, I'd return it.

Suggestion for a newbie gamer?

I'm not a gamer either. I just started on Second Life this summer because UTD bought an island.

I don't think you would come across anything like this in a normal game because they have preset actions, etc. Second Life is all user created, so it's constantly evolving.

By the way, we are building the island which will include exhibition spaces that I'm curating. It will be graduate student work. I'll let you guys know when the first opening is in case you want to check it out. This kind of activity will NOT be allowed on the island.

I'll be interested to see if we get any game suggestions. Preferably something that's not all about shooting and killing?? ;-)

Funny,

I always go first when it comes to oral. Then she usually goes if she feels like it. If not.. down we go.
