Body and Image - Woman's Survey
"One thing I’ve noticed, especially from personal experience, is that it’s very hard to talk to someone else, a friend or family member for instance, who does have really bad body image/ health issues to do with body image. And it’s pretty clear that all of us will most probably meet at least someone with those issues; we can’t avoid it.
So let’s start talking to each other at least."

Do you consider yourself attractive? sometimes
Do others consider you attractive? yes
What is your biggest insecurity and why? probably my butt. Even when I was a teenager and thin, kids at school told me I had a big butt. So now I don't like to walk in front of people.
Have you/Would you consider using plastic surgery? Why or why not? Ideally? No. I have better things to spend my money on, like camera equipment! ;-)
What is your relationship with make-up? I can live without it and usually do. If I do wear it and receive comments like, "wow - you look good today" or "you must have gotten some sleep", it just makes me wear it less and less. I don't need that kind of compliment.
How much money do you/think is reasonable to spend on your appearance? Well, because I'm a broke art student, not much! I'm lucky to afford a good cleanser and moisturizer. That's about it. I do, however, like a good hair cut and will pay for that every few months.
What is your experience of dieting? I was never overweight until I went through my divorce. Of course I know that now, but before I always thought I was fat. That was 50 pounds ago. Can you imagine? I thought I was fat at 110. Dieting, of course, was and is the devil because I hate being told I can't do something or have something. I can't follow those specific programs because I like to do my own thing. So I guess it was a matter of starving until I dropped 10 pounds or so. Now I'm too busy and stressed with school to focus on exercise or diet.
Have you/ anyone you know tried any specific diet programs i.e. Lighter Life? How did that affect your health? your moods? your relationships? My family and friends have tried specific diet programs. They seemed quite content but as with most diets, meal planning becomes the entire meaning of existence. I've watched all of them lose it, gain it, lose it, gain it. It almost becomes part of life and accepted as something funny. My family focuses much of their humor around weight issues.
Do you have any experiences of eating disorders i.e. either yourself or someone you know? A friend of mine became anorexic in junior high school after a series of stunts of not eating for attention. She had a track record of doing things like that. I didn't take it seriously until I saw her in a tank top one day. I'd never seen ribs like that.
How did other people react to this; what was the fallout? Most people just rolled their eyes at her. Her mother put her in a different school until she got better. Even I thought she just wanted attention, but hindsight shows me that she has had body image issues for years. It also became quite clear that a lot of us are just a step away from that.
Have you had negative experiences relating to your appearance and people’s reactions to it? Mostly it was the big butt thing that I mentioned above. I'm always trying to hide it.
What about positive reactions to your body? It's funny - I actually receive positive comments about my body, AND my butt! ;-) But those comments from junior high just seem to stick.
How has your body image and attitude changed over the years? Oh I'm much more relaxed about it now. Just 2 years ago I was obsessed with my weight and hating myself for it. I felt like a failure because I couldn't get control over myself. Now I get upset like when I get a freakin' passport picture! But I get over it. It pisses me off whenever I feel like that because I know better. I basically woke up and recognized that I was buying into the trap of the ideal.
What do you love about your body? That it's real.
What is your opinion on the media portrayal of women’s bodies? Oh my - that's a post in itself. I would have to sit for days to come up with the words for that. Hideous.
What would you change about the way you/ your friends/ your family/ general people see their bodies? I'd like to see the body become an afterthought. That's not to say I think we should throw our health to the wind. I mentioned earlier that when dieting, meal planning becomes the entire existence. I think with women, the quest for the ideal body can become the entire existence.
What makes you feel beautiful? For some reason, I feel beautiful when standing or sitting in the sunlight. Maybe it's that warmth.
and just for fun… Do you shave legs/pits/upper lip moustache? Not usually, but I will on occasion for an art piece! ;-) We'll see how much I cave in to societal pressure this summer.

Do you consider yourself attractive? Sometimes more than others
Do others consider you attractive? I get compliments in public a few times a day, every one very flattering . Never gets old.
What is your biggest insecurity and why? My stomach/thighs/upper arms. They have always been a bit flawed since I was a kid. It's just my build. I wish they were thin. Also, my breasts seem too large. I would rather be flat -chested.
Have you/Would you consider using plastic surgery? Why or why not? Well, it's not the most natural of operations...most likely not.
What is your relationship with make-up? I can get by with a spot of eyeliner and call it a day:) Ideally, i'd like to spend more time in front of the mirror but no more than 10 minutes.
How much money do you/think is reasonable to spend on your appearance? I like to splurge every now and then...treat myself. MAC products are my favorite. They are middle range.
What is your experience of dieting? I have never dieted, but have been vegan and my energy was even lower than usual which wasn't ideal.
Have you/ anyone you know tried any specific diet programs i.e. Lighter Life? How did that affect your health? your moods? your relationships? Can't say I have.
Do you have any experiences of eating disorders i.e. either yourself or someone you know? I was bulimic for...about 6 months on and off..give or take. Soon to be tackled after knocking some sense into myself. Media and society is just so cruel nowdays and it's pressuring. But that is no excuse. A few people I know are/have been anorexic...and lost oodles of weight. It sounded tempting until one told me they had almost died when hit with a fever due to lack of body cooperation . Scary stuff.
How did other people react to this; what was the fallout? Well, my family knew eventually I was struggling with bulimia but had no idea until I told them. My brother mentioned getting suspicious after hearing the sink too often..but that's about it. They were shocked. I went through counseling and it helped tremendously, and I would never put myself in jeopardy like that again.
Have you had negative experiences relating to your appearance and people’s reactions to it? Yes...a few years ago, I was (still sort of am )) a bit of a tom boy and always had guy friends. Some girls , I think, got a bit jealous and I soon heard through the grape vine that I was 'chubby'. This was ....excruciatingly painful. I had never even heard this before, let alone thought about my weight. Soon this would turn into a neverending journey through hell. The nerve! I was a healthy young girl, without any worry in the world, and the moment these words are spoken about me I get torn apart. For years.
What about positive reactions to your body? A few times people have said, "You look so skinny!" After a few months of vigorous excersise. Then I get defensive like..."Are they saying that in a negative way?" It's difficult for me to be happy with my weight.
How has your body image and attitude changed over the years? I am beginning to become more comfortable with the way my body was built, but still battling the thin issue. Wanting to see myself as skinny, not 'average'. Lean, not ..athletic.
What do you love about your body? That I am petite:) It's cute.
What is your opinion on the media portrayal of women’s bodies? I am disgusted with it. It has caused nothing but pain. What is happening to society?
What would you change about the way you/ your friends/ your family/ general people see their bodies? They shouldn't be top priority. It's unhealthy.
What makes you feel beautiful? The smell of candles...sunsets.....fresh air......naturality! The sense of being carefree!
and just for fun… Do you shave legs/pits/upper lip moustache? Most certainly do! :)) Feels cleaner.

Do you consider yourself attractive? sometimes
Do others consider you attractive? yes. i get sick of the comments or looks or whatever. it gets old.
What is your biggest insecurity and why? my boobs. they seem way too big for my smaller framed body. and people think that its okay to comment on my boobs, when its really not. i wish i didnt have boobs at all.
also my thighs. they seem huge
Have you/Would you consider using plastic surgery? Why or why not? ive had 2 birthmarks removed when i was 7. but other than that, im completely against it. its so unnatural.
What is your relationship with make-up? dont like it... just wear suncream or lipbalm out mosltly. i wear eyeshadow and mascara and lipgloss and bronzer and everything to parties though. you stand out if you don't.
How much money do you/think is reasonable to spend on your appearance? not too much. but good haircuts are totally worth it.
What is your experience of dieting? i starved myself for like 3 days when i was 13... gave up, kept falling asleep. but right now im not on any particular diet, i just dont eat junk food because it makes me feel sick, i dont really enjoy it. also im a vegetarian, but thats mostly for moral and enviromental issues.
Have you/ anyone you know tried any specific diet programs i.e. Lighter Life? How did that affect your health? your moods? your relationships? my aunt was on weight watchers for a while. she didnt lose any weight. it was stupid she wasnt even fat to begin with.
Do you have any experiences of eating disorders i.e. either yourself or someone you know? my sister has anorexia for about 2 years now. shes almost died a few times. its scary because... she could die. thats a real possibility, but i still have to go to school and go out and live but how can i when shes dying? but everyone thinks eds are so glamorous oooh. i hate nicole richie now. because all the girls i know want to be her.
How did other people react to this; what was the fallout? shes been in hospital a few times. mostly everyone was a bit confused... theres never been any eating problems in the family.
Have you had negative experiences relating to your appearance and people’s reactions to it? sometimes i dont go out because i feel too ugly or fat.
also most of the time i just wish i could be a guy, they never get noticed for how they look do they? a guy can be handsome but girls dont feel the need to full on stare or comment or whatever. what gives boys the right to do it to girls?
What about positive reactions to your body? im pretty, people say so. but i never really see it like they do. sometimes i feel like theyre making a joke out of me.
How has your body image and attitude changed over the years? im much more self consious now that im a teen. i guess ive become very absorbed in how my body looks, how many calories ive eaten, how many ive burnt. i wish i could just live and do whatever i wanted without caring.
What do you love about your body? that no one else has a body like me, that you can't buy it. i love that i can play basketball and go running and not collapse. i love that its all mine. i also secretly love my cellulite on my upper thighs :) i think its awesome. (but dont tell anyone... im supposed to hate it right ??)
What is your opinion on the media portrayal of women’s bodies? none of its real. i try to avoid it as much as i can; i cant eat after reading vogue, i feel obese. i wish they would show real women... i mean, some people look like that, but the other 95% don't. it just makes the rest of us feel like shit.
What would you change about the way you/ your friends/ your family/ general people see their bodies? that they could see them as their own. i try really hard to do this; i try really hard to think about my body as my own, just as nicole richie has her own body. but what does her body have to do with my body? her body doesnt make my body fat.
What makes you feel beautiful? doing good things for people, making them smile.
and just for fun… Do you shave legs/pits/upper lip moustache? i hate it but i do it religiously. i dont want to be gross and hairy
