« Home | Imagining Ourselves » Thursday, July 05, 2007Time Marches On![]() "Time marches on, and eventually you realize it's marching across your face." It's a funny saying, especially when delivered by a southern women in a beauty shop. But in reality, it's a message sent to women of all ages that they should do whatever necessary to hide the signs of aging. The beauty industry banks on it. Their pocket books provide a comfortable cushy seat for you to ride as you buy into their schemes. God forbid you actually look like you've experienced life. Even as I try to fight this battle, some mornings I find it hard to look myself in the mirror and love what I see. Labels: beauty rituals, feminism ![]() |

Oh Christi - you must love what you see...because what you see is beautiful to me!
"God forbid you actually look like you've experienced life"
Why?
I'm saying that's how the beauty industry wants you to feel. Fight the signs of aging, blah blah.
I get your point C, and I'm saying "what do they know?"
All they want is to take our money - patriarchal capitalism at it's finest! Create the insecurity (via porn, male entilement, etc) and then make out they're doing us a favour by creating all those ridiculous potions designed to make us think we're on the road to looking 'younger'!
I don't want to look younger, personally. I'd be scared if my older women friends suddenly looked like 25!
We have to love what we see otherwise we'd just have to stay indoors in a darkened room and the patriarchal capitalists would win and I'm not having that.
Time marches across all of us from the day we're born and it's about time that women were released from patriarchy's chains of 'youth' because they're meaningless (much like the rest of patriarchy's dictats, actually!)
