Co-Modify - An Online Happening

This week I'm participating in Co-Modify, a free-form public art performance where performers enact a fictional "sponsorship" by a company. This is an online happening that spans across multiple social networking sites. The project is directed by artist An Xiao who directs @Platea.

The performance speaks to the way the context of your social life online is used to send you embedded advertising catered to your lifestyle and interests. It's a "commentary on the commodification of social media and, by extension, the commodification of our social lives in general."

Since the last thing I wanted to do is to provide yet more advertising to a company, I created a fictional business called C-URCHIN. It's a beauty cream that supposedly reduces the appearance of a double chin. Containing high levels of vitamin C and a compound found only in sea urchins, a free one-week trial shows dramatic results!

You'll see me posting on twitter, facebook, 12seconds.tv, seesmic.com, flickr, and here. I'm interested to see what happens. Who knows what crazy ads will be thrown my way or how many people start trying to find C-URCHIN.

Find out more about the project here. http://plateastweets.blogspot.com/

I guess it's hard to find a fictional name that no-one else has come up with.....and I guess it's not a registered legal name or anything....but it's my business name! lol http://www.etsy.seaurchin.com certainly googling c-urchin brings up my etsy, flickr and such....so you may be inadvertantly advertising me! I guess people will wonder why when they google a face cream they're getting a shop full of handmade ceramic jewellery! I'm not expecting you to do anything, and I know I don't have a legal leg to stand on....just that there is someone out there with the business name of c-urchin! ;)

Hi Lisa! I laughed when I found out you existed. Yep - can't come up with an original name. I chose C for vitamin C, and it's pronounced "see your chin" instead of sea urchin. ;-)

We had a fun performance. I don't know if you watched all my videos and such.

One girl chose Sharpie as her sponsor, and they loved what she did so much, she's now going to get paid to do it. Nice.

Anyway-nice to meet you! I did look at your jewelry. Did your stats increase?

No, I haven't looked at the videos (I can never make them work properly on my compter) but it sounds like an interesting project....I'm just getting to the age that I feel I look ill without makeup and should buy some wrinkle cream, but to be honest I'm not really bothered about either....maybe I will be in another couple of years!

Stats on my shop is another thing I've been meaning to work out....so at the moment I don't know if you've sent anyone my way! ;)

I found you on twitter earlier so I'll follow the project from there :)
